Deaf Foundation of BC
Deaf Foundation of B.C. (DF) is a private foundation incorporated in 1999 to hold and invest monies for Deaf British Columbians. The Deaf Foundation's primary objectives are to support, promote and encourage the development of projects that benefit Deaf British Columbians. Deaf Foundation of British Columbia funded activities provide a service directly linked and related to the community, or initiatives allowing the community to address any issues affecting Deaf British Columbians.
OBJECTIVES:
- To support and to promote the well-being of the Deaf;
- To contribute to the betterment and the enchancement of the social, cultural, and educational activities of the Deaf;
- To preserve and to promote Deaf Heritage, Culture, and Language.

- In the cultural and linguistic preservation of Deafhood;
- In encouraging the development of volunteer opportunities for the enchancement of individual skills;
- In working partnerships that respect the dignity and independence of participants;
- In educating and working together to find strong and proactive solutions for the community's overall betterment and well-being;
- In supporting new and creative avenues addressing the needs of socio-economically disdvantaged Deaf individuals / groups.
Funding may be granted for:
- Arts and Culture
- Educational Workshops
- Health and Welfare
- Information Network
- Literacy
- Women's Issues
- Youth Activities
- Advocacy
Who can apply?
Associations with charitable registration numbers and other qualified applicant(s) under the Income Tax Act can apply for funding. Organizations who apply for funding must show fiscal responsibility, accountability and good management of their organization. Fifty-one percent (51%) of the board members should be Deaf.* DF does NOT award money to individuals for personal use. *
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS:
- Projects should be for the betterment and the enhancement of community.
- The organization should ensure that their project will use volunteers.
- The project should show that there is significant support from other multiple funding sources (including community and other agencies in the field).
- Deaf people who will benefit from the project should be involved in the development, the implementation, the execution, the completion and then theevaluation of the project.
- The organization should show respect for cultural diversity.
- Organizations must have at least 50% of their overall funding available from other sources when they apply to the Deaf Foundation.
Funding will not be granted for:
- 100% of a project's costs;
- An organization's operational or core expenses;
- Retroactive funding or any project's expenses incurred prior to the Foundation's decision date;
- Projects based outside of B.C.;
- Debt, retirement, or reserves; mortgage payments;
- Corporate sponsored conferences, competitions, festivals, symposia, annual events, travel to/from or attendance at such events;
- Fund-raising activities;
- Office equipment and/or furniture (e.g. computers);
- Activities of religious organizations;
- Sabbatical leaves, student exchanges;
- Medical facilities or equipments
- Amateur sports;
- Library acquisitions, book publication;
- Support for dissertation research;
- Endowment grants;
- Activities previously and presently supported through government funding.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
If your organization meets the requirements to apply for funding, complete the application form and send it to DF at least 12 weeks (84 days) prior to your project's start date to allow time for DF to review your application form.APPLICANTS ARE INVITED TO SEND THEIR PROPOSALS ANY TIME THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
If the application form is incomplete, DF will not accept your application. When your application is received, it will be evaluated by the Program Manager. After ensuring that your application meets all the appropriate criterions, it will in turn be reviewed by the DF directors for final decision. Within 12 weeks after the receipt of the appplication, you will receive written notice of the decision which may include the terms and conditions of any grant that has been awarded. DF may contact you with further questions and/or clarifications regarding your application.
N.B. Submitted materials become the property of the Deaf Foundation. Final decisions on all grants rest with the Foundation and access to the Foundation’s decisions is restricted.
The Deaf Foundation does not provide retroactive funding. All funded activities must begin after the decision date.
